 The Walking Stick Buying Guide

For many of us, a walking stick is an important accessory for our day to day lives and helps us move around and feel safe and stable when we walk. However, with so many models and styles on the market, it can be hard to know which type of walking stick to choose, as well as how to correctly size one. In this article, we’re going through how to choose a walking stick and how to properly measure one so you can walk and move with ease.

Different kinds of walking sticks

A walking stick is an essential part of many people’s lives, allowing users to feel independent while going about their day. With so many models on the market, it can be hard to know which type will best suit you and your lifestyle. There are a variety of walking sticks available at Averee to assist with stability and mobility, and all with their own features and benefits.

1. Standard cane

A standard cane is the most common model of walking stick. As the name suggests, it is designed with a straight shaft with a curved handle. Standard walking sticks are available in a variety of materials including wood and metal. Wooden walking canes are more of a traditional style and although still very popular, they cannot be manually adjusted. Whilst metal walking sticks are often extremely lightweight and can be adjusted to fit a variety of heights.

Many standard walking sticks come with foam grip handles or ones that mould to your hands. Metal walking sticks also come in an array of designs and patterns, so you can customise your walking stick to your own style.

2. Foldable travel walking stick

Foldable walking sticks look very similar to a standard walking stick; however, they can be easily folded up when not in use. Once you have the walking sticks at the right height for you, you can simply fold down the stick with ease, thanks to the three compartmental design. Once folded down, the walking stick can be kept in your bag or the car when not in use and can be easily packed when travelling.

3. Offset walking stick

Our offset walking sticks are similar to the standard walking stick and crafted in lightweight metal; however, the offset design creates a bend in the shaft underneath the handle. Some users find that this style makes it easier to bear weight and to grip.

How to choose a walking stick

When picking a walking stick, there are a few aspects to consider, such as:

1. Lifestyle

Consider your lifestyle. Do you enjoy lots of hobbies? Do you like being out of the house and getting out and about? Or do you prefer to stay at home and garden? All your lifestyle factors will be important to consider when picking a walking stick because it’s important to ensure it will be able to keep up with you and provide you with enough stability.

Depending on your lifestyle, you may need more than one walking stick. For example, if you like to be out and about, a folding walking stick would be convenient to have in the car, while at home, having a standard walking stick that’s more stable, especially if you enjoy gardening or working around the home, would be beneficial.

2. Material

Not all walking sticks are made the same and the material you choose can have an impact on how you use it. A wooden walking cane is more of a traditional style. They are sturdy and easy to use and can be a little heavier due to the construction – which can be very helpful for keeping you stable. However, wooden walking canes cannot be manually adjusted, so they are not very versatile.

Metal walking sticks are usually designed to be lightweight and versatile, thanks to their compartmentalised shaft construction, so can be easily adjusted to suit any height. Most metal walking sticks also come with the option to change grips if needed, to better suit a range of users.

3. Style

As mentioned above, your walking stick is a device that will be used most days, so look for one that suits your style and personality. Most metal walking sticks usually come with a huge array of colourful designs and patterns, so there are plenty of options to choose from. If you enjoy bright colours and patterns, opt for a walking stick with a similar aesthetic, like florals or fun images. If you’re more of a minimalist opt for classic block colours, like blue, black or metallic.

Why is it important to have the correct walking stick?

A walking stick is an item that can be used every day so it’s important to make sure that you have one that you like and that works for your lifestyle, walking style and stability level. Not to mention that if your walking stick is the wrong height, it can also have negative effects on your posture and overall wellbeing.

For example, a walking stick that is too short will cause you to lean down too far to get the required stability, causing your spine and shoulders to slump forward. If your walking stick is too tall, you will find that you won’t have enough stability while walking and you may be more prone to falling.

How to measure the right height for your walking stick

When choosing the correct size for your walking stick, there are a few steps to take to get the right height:

1. Stand at your natural height

Stand naturally with your shoulders relaxed and put your arms at your side where they would naturally hang. Make sure you are wearing your regular shoes that you would wear while out and about, in the garden or at home.

2. Measure your height

With your arms relaxed, measure from the wrist bone to the ground to get the right height for your walking stick. You will need someone to help you with this step, so make sure that they measure from your wrist to the floor.

If you don’t have a measuring tape, flip the walking stick upside down with the handle on the ground. Then end of the walking stick should reach the middle of your wrist if it’s the right height.

3. Adjust your walking stick accordingly

Now with the height measured from your wrist to the ground, you can adjust your walking stick. If you have an adjustable walking stick, this is easily changeable. Just push the small button on the length of the stick and slide the inner shaft up or down until you get your desired height.
